Today I’m going to share a story with you about my client, Melissa. (All personal information has been modified for privacy purposes.)
Melissa is 45 and had spent twenty years teaching high school English. She loved literature and always dreamed about writing her own novel but it was never the right time. Between working full time, marriage and kids, she had little time to herself let alone time to sit and write uninterrupted.
When she finally left teaching to pursue writing full-time, she was haunted by thoughts like:
“I feel like a fraud.”
“I’ve wasted so much time.”
“It’s too late to start over.”
These thoughts made her hesitant to share her work, network with other writers, or even call herself a “writer”.
Melissa and I partnered together to identify and unpack the belief: “It’s too late.” We explored what Melissa had gained from her years of teaching. 1. A deep understanding of storytelling and structure. 2. Empathy and insight into human behavior. 3. Discipline and time management skills.
Then came the reframe: “My journey wasn’t a waste – it was preparation.”
Melissa and I came up with a helpful statement that she could use when doubt and anxious thoughts crept in: “I’m not starting over. I’m starting from experience.”
This simple shift in perspective gave Melissa the space to see her age and background as assets. She joined a local writing group, submitted short stories to literary magazines, and even gave a talk at a community center titled “It’s Never Too Late to Begin.” She stopped comparing herself to younger writers and started celebrating her own voice.
Within a year, Melissa published two short stories and is halfway through her first novel. More importantly, she felt proud—not just of her writing, but of her courage.
